Virgin Mary festival

First I need to correct myself, while there are some devout catholics on the island, most people are devout greek orthodox and the church fair that I went to last night was for them. It felt like a movie set...in Louisiana because of the humidity but there was tons to see. lots of mylar balloons for sale, gyros, and these doughnut hold type things but less light and more cakey smothered in chocolate. Besides the food there were placemats for sale, napkins, shower curtains, jewelry, remote controls, toy plastic bikes that ride with batteries oh and a ferris wheel, goufer game etc. all things to make you want to puke after eating too many sweets and dripping sweat from all orifices. Thats great huh.
So we arrived by packed bus and I saved my friend from the impending fall when we started to go again. That obsessive guarding pays off when least expected (stuck my knee out for her to sit on, abby I know you think I am amazing). We had no idea where the stop was other than...you will know. after walking around and smiling at the vendors who were clearly not catering to the tourists (good sign) we got our kebab sandwiches (not gyros) and sat down. Let me tell you...the food was so good. the meat seasoned so perfectly that I forgot I was eating carcas and the taziki was thick good ness. here they put some fried potatoes on top which was intersting and filling. At first sight I thought I might need two but after I was full from only one. So we wandered around and saw some chairs set up with old people sitting in them. since I think the old people always have a idea of where the good things are we sat down too and waited for the show. After the priest's blessing the entertainment came out. It was very traditional and there were two groups the young adults and the second was junior high ish student. funny and fumbly. Started slow and finished fast. I enjoyed the steps.
after the show we checked out a photo exhibit of the church's metamorphosis and it was interesting to see pics from the 60s or 70s when military men guarded all church fuctions. we walked around the bazaar area and headed back. It was 10:30 and my bed time!
so It is lovely here I have attached a picture of the hotel and the dancers. I am staying out of the heat and will go to the old town tonight. I bought my ticket to Kos for Friday evening and then from there to Naxos. YAY. this is a good adventure.

  1. Good dinner where I bet Senol met some friends when he was in Boston.

After reading about your adventures in Turkey and Rhodes, I had ate dinner last evening at the Saray Restaurant in Packard's Corner, Boston. They featured a Ramadan feast for expatriate Turks and their friends. Mesut served me Doner Kabab, delicious, washed down with a Stella Artois brought in from the next door liquor store; no liquor on the menu but he suggested I buy it and bring it in. Mesut didnt recognize Senol or Emre's names, but that could be caused by my pronunciation.

The Turks were their normal ebullient selves with that good dinner helping me share your trip, visualizing each place.

  3. Watch the encouragement, RTK! Dad IS hilarious. I can only imagine Mesut's face when Dad asked him whether he knows Senol. Classic.
Sometimes it's hard for me to believe you are so far away, but those pictures and names of places I do not recognize bring me right smack back to reality.
It has been BOILING here this week. Sticky and hot.
    Miss you and love you!
